In this unit, students will develop the foundational literacy skills that they will need for the entire school year: close reading, annotating texts, and engaging in evidence-based discussion and writing.
Teacher will model these processes for students in order to help them develop these skills. Furthermore, students will read, analyze and discuss both poetry and narratives, citing strong and thorough textual evidence to support their analyses of an author’s use of various literary techniques.

What must an author do in order to craft a story into a work of literary art?
How do authors use complex characters, their motivation, and other detail, such as word choice, to contribute to the meaning and theme?
