Objective: Students will test on cornell note taking and annotation on the article, "High school prom, 50 years later" by Mariano Castillo.
Rites of passage are rituals or events that mark a person's transition from one status to another, e.g. from childhood to adulthood (quinceanera) or from single to married (wedding).
Other events that can be considered rites of passage are earning a driver’s license, attending a prom, or graduating from high school or college.
The article we are read today is called “High School Prom: 50 Years Later.” It is focused on people whose prom was cancelled their senior year due to racial tension in the 1960s.
Class Discussion: Verbal Question- How would you feel if you were denied your prom or graduation? How is being denied different from choosing not to attend? Explain yourself. Provide evidence.
WRITE TWO THOUGHTFUL PARAGRAPHS in your cornell notes:
1. SUMMARIZE THE TEXT. FOCUS ON KEY POINTS ONLY.
2. EXPLAIN WHETHER YOU THINK A SOCIAL INJUSTICE LIKE THE ONE OCCURRING IN ARTICLE COULD HAPPEN NOW. BE SURE TO JUSTIFY YOUR POSITION WITH EVIDENCE FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE OR OBSERVATIONS.
Objective: Students will compare and contrast different points of view.
